Successfully Flying in Rocket League

So I've been playing Rocket League for about a year now. I just can't understand why I'm so bad at flying through the air. It seems like I watch other people fly around for a good 5 seconds in the air. I'm glad if I last 1 second. Should I be holding forward on the left thumbstick while flying? Any tips or tricks would be helpful. Thanks a bunch!

Make a custom match with just yourself and set the boost to unlimited. Then you'll have plenty of time to practice.

I found this beginner youtube tutorial very useful. The short answer is to jump, and then hold back on the left stick to get into the 'rocket' position.
