Ran out of visa pages for passport

I ran out of visa pages for my US passport. Visa center has my passport. Do I need to get the passport back before I apply for a new one? Is there any way I can quickly get extra visa pages added rather than getting a brand new one?

Not any more, but you can apply for a 52-page replacement.

State department halted adding of extra pages this year see here.

You'll need your passport back if you want to renew by mail. If time is tight and you can't get your passport back in time you might to have apply in person via emergency service (see here)

Response by poster: I'm gonna go in person, just want to know if I need my old (non expired) passport in hand, considering it isn't actually lost. I need the new passport ASAP.

Best answer: Yes, you need your passport in hand. Your existing passport will be destroyed and replaced with a new one.

(In the US you will get your old passport back, with holes punched in it and "cancelled" stamped on it. It will come back to you by mail, under separate cover from your new one, often somewhat slower.)

Just FWIW I mailed my US passport for non-expedited renewal last month and they got the new one to me in exactly 2 weeks. The cancelled passport came back 3 days after the new one.
