did you happen to read a recent article about a trend spotter?

I can't find this again so I can read the whole thing... a recent article about a man with an unusual job. He visits people in their homes and spots trends. He does this up to 300 nights per year. Did you happen to read this too or know of this person? I just wanted to read about it.

The trend spotter in question looks to be Martin Lindstrom - the blurb for his book mentions the 300 nights per year he spends in strangers' homes.

There was an article on him in Forbes in February, but it doesn't seem to mention how many nights he spends visiting homes.

Have a look at William Gibson's Blue Ant Trilogy. Trend spotting is one of the central themes running through the series.
