The best spots for snorkeling in Crete?

We're going to for five days in late May. We'll be driving around to see the big standard stuff – Knossus and Chania and Samaria Gorge. What we'd really like to do is to hit two or three snorkelling spots along the way and spend a few afternoons staring at fish!

The water will apparently be about 19 degrees celsius, which means we're probably looking for half-hour dips from shore or a wee boat rather than whole afternoons spent floating in the drink.

Chartering a boat is outside our budget and nautical skill – we're looking for places where you can either get to good stuff from the shore or that have the kind of tourist boats that will take us along with ~10 others to a renowned spot. Similarly the ferry to other islands is out of our price range.

Which are the best spots on the island to go befriend some unlucky octopodes?

I can’t help with specific snorkelling spots, but I can say that the South part of the island (Libyan Sea) is a much more interesting experience in the water. It’s colder, clearer, cleaner, gets deeper faster than the north.

Try Sougia, Paleochora, Triopetra (the last one is in Rethymno province). It’s a little drive to get to the south, as there are only smaller roads, but it’s worth it.
