"Underground" comedy shows in NYC?

I'm interested in comedy shows in NYC that take place outside the big mainstream venues like Caroline's or Gotham Comedy Club. For lack of a better term, you might call what I'm looking for "underground" comedy shows, but I'm not construing that term narrowly. Just really looking to get away from the more touristy spots that seem to often feature bland acts. Edgier/off-beat stuff welcome. Thanks for your ideas!

Not exactly "underground," but Jessica Williams's Two Dope Queens show on Wednesdays at Union Hall, Wyatt Cenac's Night Train show on Mondays at Littlefield, regular Friday nights at Niagara, and random stuff at Karma Bar and Lounge.

Check out The Creek and the Cave in Long Island City.

You want comedy Sundays at the Knitting Factory. Hannibal Burress used to host, their lineups are always tight and drop-ins are common. It's a younger and edgier brand of standup for sure, but in my opinion the cream of the up-and-coming crop. Make sure to arrive at least 45 minutes early.

There's the UCB. Also not exactly underground. Just realized I haven't been there since they were on 22nd street. Their "new" location (where they've been for more than 10 years) is on 26th.

This would take a little legwork but Jo Firestone's show on WFMU has two local comedy guests every week. You can see where all these up and comers are performing by checking out their websites.

Along the lines of the UCB, there's also the PIT. And Magnet.

UCB. Go see Improvised Seinfeld, you won't be disappointed.

Reckless Theater on 29th.
