What's the closest offline notebook like Circus Ponies?

Circus Ponies Notebook is now defunct. Does anyone have a suggestion for an offline outliner/notetaker/todolist that's similar?

These are the things that I really want:
- offline, completely off the cloud
- password protected
- has checkboxes
- clean interface

Strongly preferred:
- Mac compatible

I really liked using Circus Ponies Notebook. It was slightly clunky but it had a ton of different features.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!

Several people have recommended Alfon Schmid's Notebooks, which in fact has much of the same look and feel.

Another one, rather obscure but very reminiscent of OneNote, is GrowlyNotes.

@radsqd
Thanks for the tip, but there is no offline version for Mac users, it seems.
