Akron, OH Crimefilter - early 1970's

I moved to Akron, OH, at about first grade in 1970. There was a stabbing double murder of girls at nearly my age of 8 at or shortly after the time, perhaps 1971. I remember it affecting me deeply, but I'd like to find more information about the crime, especially the convicted criminal who did it.

They found a knife involved in the crime under a floorboard in the killer's home. Google has been (unusually) worthless. This crime made me feel in many ways of horrible as a child and that has made me feel like if I could learn more as an adult and smooth over the bad feelings I have about the crime.
/should my parents not have let me read the paper at that age? Interested in thoughts about this as well. It's bothered me all my life. If I could get more info, I could only think it would help.

Best answer: I found this newspaper article that seems to match your description: Neighbor Held in Deaths of Two Little Akron Girls.

I'm pretty sure that I've read a recent long form article about this case, but I couldn't find it in a cursory Google search.

Best answer: An online index to the Columbus Dispatch newspaper includes the following references:

'KENNETH S LYKENS, 49, ACCUSED OF STABBING A CLINTON TWSP WOMAN, IS ALLOWED TO LEAVE A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL, DESPITE BEING CHARGED WITH STABBING DEATHS OF TWO AKRON GIRLS'
Date: Thursday, September 9, 1993
Page: 1 D
Byline: BRENT LALONDE

'KENNETH S LYKENS, 49, 1960 W BROAD ST, CHARGED WITH FELONIOUS ASSAULT FOR STABBING IDALENE EVANS, 27, 3137 WESTERVILLE RD'

Lykens seems to have died in 2006.

Best answer: two more newspaper columns (both short): insanity plea; defense

(you may already have seen these, from google - just wanted to make the list here complete).

Response by poster: Thank all of you. In a strange way, this helps my feelings. I did spend a ton of my childhood thinking about this crime.
Years of searching for info never yielded any results. I'm grateful!
