How do I make these components work together properly?

The PC, DVD changer, HDTV, receiver and 5.1 speakers, theoretically, were properly set up. They're not working, and other configurations aren't working! How can I get them working together?

I have the following components:

ACER XC-603 slim desktop
Onkyo TX-NR535 receiver
Toshiba 46G300U1
KHL 5.1 speaker system (this isn't causing me a problem)
Yamaha DV-C6860 DVD 5-disc changer

While everything was unplugged, I hooked up the speakers.
Then I connected the TV's HDMI from HDMI1 to the receiver's designated TV HDMI port.
Then I attached the computer to the receiver via the designated PC HDMI port (HDMI5) on the receiver.
Then I attached the DVD changer via component video cables Out to the receiver's In, and the coax audio the same way, out of the changer and in to Coax 1 on the receiver.

I then plugged it all in and turned the TV and the receiver on, set up the CEC between them. Set up the WiFI on the receiver, and updated both the TV's and receiver's firmware. Then I set up the receiver to ping the PC's HDMI5 port, and DVD changer to ping via component video IN, and its audio via Coax 1 IN under the digital audio setting.

But instead of a blue screen, which I expected because I've not gotten my HD antenna yet, I got "No video signal". I had to scroll through the receiver settings on the receiver.

When I turned the PC on and switched to "PC" on the receiver, I got "No video signal". Even though this is a brand new computer, and I haven't used it yet, I should've seen SOMETHING on the TV screen, yes? Will I have to get a monitor of some kind just to set this up? I have a laptop and a spare HDMI cable, if those can help.

When I turned the DVD Changer on and switched to "DVD" on the receiver, I got" No video signal", and for that one at least I have a test Mitchell and Webb DVD in there, so COME ON!

Frustrated, I took out the PC's HDMI from the receiver, and hooked it into the Toshiba's HDMI2. Then I took out the DVD connectors and plugged those into the Toshiba as well. Turned the TV back on, set up the input for the DVD, but I can't label HDMI2 for PC. PC has its own input, and I guess Toshiba expected me to do it via VGA and digital audio?

When I go into Inputs on the TV, it now reads my Onkyo, as I see the model number under HDMI1 and Toshiba's proprietary name for CEC, "REGZA-LINK" shows up in neon green. I get a blue screen, and I can see the receiver settings on the TV. The TV still doesn't pick up a video signal from the DVD player or the PC, and at this point, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

"No video signal"? Why not? How do I hook up everything correctly?

Response by poster: Oh, shoot, "out".

I meant the receiver's HDMI OUT is connected to the TV's HDMI1 IN. But they understand each other now; it's the other video signals that aren't happening.

While debugging do you have a standard monitor you can connect to the pc? I know when I plug the hdmi from a lap to a tv it takes a bit of poking at settings or function keys.

DVD player: Your receiver doesn't upconvert component video (i.e. convert analog video to digital via HDMI), so you'll need to connect component cables to your receiver's Component Video OUT ports to your TV's Video In port. Be sure to assign the component video as your DVD source in your receiver's settings menu. See the directions on page 19 of the manual (PDF version here).

PC: in the settings above, ensure the PC is set to HDMI. If that doesn't work, you may need to toggle your Windows settings to your TV. You may find it easier to connect another monitor to your receiver via VGA as a primary monitor while you alter your settings and choose the TV as your primary display.

Eh, no, probably not. Having connected a variety of computers and other video devices to a variety of TVs/projectors/monitors for either presentations or because I work for a tiny company that tends to acquire computers and monitors on a catch-as-catch-can basis, IME pretty much all TVs and most LCD monitors tend to default to either a black screen or a manufacturer logo with a "no video signal" message if they're not receiving a useable signal.

And yeah, I'll Nth the idea that the most likely problem is that your desktop isn't set to automatically output your desktop image via the HDMI port. (Like, I've run into situations before where the HDMI only became active when watching a DVD on the computer or using a dedicated media program.) So yes, you might need to hook up another monitor to the desktop's VGA so you can tweak your display settings to make the HDMI usable all of the time.

but I can't label HDMI2 for PC.

Your labeling options on the TV are limited, so apparently you can't just label any input "PC." See p. 35 of the your Toshiba owner's manual here (pdf).

Did you try turning on the receiver first? IME PCs often don't bother outputting to HDMI during boot unless they recognize a "display" available to output to when they power on. (Actually I bumped into this problem the other night.)

Response by poster: I called Toshiba and, yes, I had to put another set of component video and digital audio cables into the TV and receiver also, and will reset that. I'm glad I had spares of both from a previous set up. I haven't had a desktop type of computer for about 4 years now, so I guess a trip to the SA is in order this week to get a monitor and VGA cable!

Oy.

Thanks, all!
