How does an eating disorder treatment team work together?

Diagnosed with an eating disorder last week. My dietitian will consult with my therapist of 3 years. We haven't been focusing on the ED in therapy very much up to this point. What kinds of things will the nutritionist and therapist talk about? What will the nutritionist want to know about therapy, and what info will my therapist get from the nutritionist?

Hi - I'm in ED recovery. I'm going to share my experience - this won't be yours, but maybe you can glean something from it.

When I started seeing a registered dietitian (RD), she was someone who worked with people with EDs. My therapist is also an ED specialist. My therapist was very clear with the RD that I am a restricter and so anything that smelled of me restricting my food was a no go. Counting calories, putting any food on a scale, etc. generally, in my experience leads me to lower and lower levels until I'm at a bare minimum. Second, I need/ed to learn to feed myself (I'm still not very good at it). My therapist thinks/thought that it was important that my RD work with me to eat three meals plus snacks on a regular basis and stick to that plan - I'm terrible at it. Still.

My RD shares with my therapist overall issues, although I'm more likely to share it first, such as when I'm totally resisting making a certain change or adding something to my foods. There's usually something behind the resistance. When I'm crying in the RD office because of a food suggestion, that's not because the cereal is making me cry.

Overall, they're exchanging thoughts. The RD might ask, how do you think Sophie might react to this suggestion and the therapist might know because she's known me a while - whether it would be a big trigger or not. The therapist might ask if there's anything that I'm having trouble with that she can work on with me in therapy. That's basically the gist of it. If you have any questions or you just want to chat, feel free to memail me.
