My family (aged 1-70) is having new year together for the first time in ages. What can we do that will make it a really memorable night? We're all staying in the same house, and have transport if needed. We're in the southern hemisphere so it will be light pretty late. How can I make it a great night, for kids and adults alike?

I don't mean to sound like a Hallmark commercial, but "My family is having new year together for the first time in ages" will be the memorable part. 10 years from now nobody is going to say "Remember that NYE we all go together? God, do you remember the cake?" They're going to say "God, do you remember when Auntie Maude..."

That said: sparklers. Board games. Snack foods. Photo props... and maybe even a selfie booth.

Give the kids torches and let them play hide and seek with them once it gets dark, we used to do this with the other neighbourhood kids when my parents had parties. Best fun ever.

Bubble wrap - tons of it all over the floor. Everyone gets to jump all over it at midnight. I know someone who did this at their party, and it was great fun for all ages and people still talk about it.

Or you could put it outside on the walk and driveway too if it is warm where you are.

I don't know about a selfie booth, but it might be cool to get a piece of poster board and add letter that say "NYE 2015" or something, maybe add some pictures of fireworks, and then have everyone take a picture in front of it as a the backdrop. (Paper footprints on the floor indicating where to stand? Either make sure they do it the minute they come in the door, or after a couple of stiff drinks. :7)

In January, make sure to send out prints of all the photos afterwards to all of the attendees, so that everyone has a record/keepsake of the night.
