Katie Parla for California and Beyond:replacements for the former Zagat?

Since Zagat sold to Google, it is no more reliable than TripAdvisor or Yelp. MetaFilter directed me to the Katie Parla app for Rome, and it is exactly the kind of thing I am looking for--a curated, professional guide to where to eat. Does something similar exist for California--and for that matter, the rest of the U.S. and Canada?
