Book title: history of Toronto live music clubs in the rock era

Maybe a decade ago I read a book on the history of live music venues in Toronto from the 1950s to maybe the eighties or nineties. I am maybe 80% sure that title was borrowed from a song title, but every one that comes to mind (e.g "Heart of Gold") is something other than this. Anyone know the book?

I seem to recall that it covered places that I had drunk in and in some cases performed in (The Rivoli, the Horseshoe, the Phoenix), spots that vanished just before I got to be the right age (the Gasworks, Larry's Hideaway) and places from before my day entirely (the Riverboat, the Coq au Vin). I have been trying for a week now to recall the title or author, but no luck.

Response by poster: The Benson book looks interesting but that is not the one I am looking for (published at least ten or fifteen years ago).

Oops, sorry, that's only from 2011, but might also be of interest.

Or maybe Rock and Roll Toronto?

I am also curious about to find out what this book is, clearly.

Have not been the same is a fantastic book with a narrower focus but I seem to remember a fair bit about the prehistory of Toronto music before the focus on the 1985-1995 scene. If you haven't read it, get it from the library!

^ Have Not Been The Same is the bible of the new Toronto rock scene in the late 20th century. Before The Gold Rush is a good overview of the Riverboat/Yorkville scene, with many famous Canadian folkies and rock acts.

The accompanying album for Have Not Been the Same is also great. Buy it from a local vendor without DRM!

Response by poster: I am getting a nice reading list out of this, but I am still not spotting the one I read before. Keep 'em coming, please.
