Where to find flowers in NYC tomorrow between 7am and 8am?

I am traveling to NYC and then to NJ for an important visit, and I would like to bring a big, bright, colorful, and cheerful bouquet.

I'm visiting the family of my friend who passed away in July of this year. They're really important to me, and I don't want to show up empty handed.

The difficulty:
I will be dropped off at 7th Avenue and 28th Street and then taking a train from Penn Station into NJ. I will have between 7:00 am and 8:00 am to find flowers, buy them, and then get to the train station (and buy my ticket, board, etc.). I've looked on Google Maps at a lot of florists in that area, but they are not open during this time. Metafilter, I hope you can help me find the one I've overlooked who is open.

Alternative plans:
- I can pick up a nice bouquet from a florist here in Pittsburgh, but I'm not sure how well it will survive an eight hour bus ride.
- I am open to suggestions for a cheerful, thoughtful hostess gift-type item (not wine, please) that I can buy tonight in Pittsburgh and that will travel well.
- I can pick up a bouquet in NJ, but I'd rather leave this as the last option. It's going to be a busy day, and I don't want to ask the friend who is picking me up from the train station to help me with this errand.

Thank you for helping me.

I think the best bet is a bodega or corner market not a florist. I do not know the exact area, so cannot recommend a specific place.

I have always appreciated it when, as a host gift, I received a box of pretty note cards or stationary. They travel real well.

Best answer: Almost any bodega or deli will sell bouquets of perfectly good flowers.

If you need something spectacular, you're actually going to be quite close to the flower district, and that time of day is prime time for flower shopping.

But, again, bodegas and delis and corner stores and supermarkets in Manhattan all sell nice flowers and will be open at that time.

6th Ave and 28th is the heart of the flower district. Ditto on the nice blank stationary.

There's a flower vendor in Penn Station - Petal Pusher (#350).

However, you can hardly walk down a street in Manhattan without stumbling across a bodega which sells flowers.

Best answer: You can call Petal Pusher at (212) 695-7076 to check their hours.

The flower district actually may not help you much here. The wholesalers open at 5:30AM, but the quantities are massively more than what you need... and the retail orientated stores may not yet be open.

Response by poster: Petal Pusher seems to be out of business (# is disconnected and their FB page is empty). I didn't realize most places in Manhattan sold flowers or that I would be in the middle of the flower district! My plan is to pop into a market/deli for a bouquet. Thank you, everyone, for your answers. I marked two best answers, but I appreciate all replies.

Best answer: While it's true that some delis in Manhattan sell flowers, by no means does that mean all of them do. In fact, I would argue that most of them don't. Also, there aren't as many delis around Penn Station as you might expect. In addition, most if not all delis that sell flowers pack up their displays for the night, making it that much harder to find one that sells flowers at 7 in the morning.

Your best bet is indeed Petal Pusher inside Penn Station. They're still around (I'm in Penn Station most days of the week.) Not sure about their opening hours though. Their main location is downstairs in the LIRR concourse, next to the BoA and across from Starbucks. Good luck.

Here's one florist in the flower district, right where you will be dropped off. They sell to flower shops, so they open at 4am. I think at 7 you should be ok going in as a consumer.

Regular midtown commuter here. The bodega on the northeast corner of 9th and 34th ("Gourmet Deli And Pizzeria" is its Christian name) sells lots of flowers and will be open.
