Nice nails improve one's outlook

Looking for apartments is rough on my sister so I want to make it up to her, but I don't know where anything is, plus I don't understand manicure terminology, really. Where's a nice mani/pedi place near a subway (either Columbus Circle or Parsons; or somewhere along the F or E)? She likes shellac and gelish; she'll probably want to become a regular is she likes it. Let's say around $50 or less for mani plus polish unless that's not realistic; advise me. Points for friendly, family-owned business or other charming features.

Best answer: Personally I wouldn't go for a specific place. I get my nails done when I have time and it is convenient. Maybe just give her money.

I used to go to QQ nails on 8th ave between 22nd and 23rd (off the E). It's nothing special, but it's clean and they are friendly and have what you want at the price you want.

You mean 50$ for a mani + pedi? Very Doable.
Yoyospa on W 14th st is a great cheap option. If you want to do something splurgier... Tenoverten is amazing, they have three branches (you can reserve online) and do not do acrylic extensions so it's quiet and not smelly. They have the best selection of designer colors (Chanel, Nars, RGB and more) and a super relaxing atmosphere. They are pricey, but do a very beautiful job, and will let you test colors. They also have a quickie (less than 20 min) manicure special for 15$ that is better than most other's regular manicure. No hand massage, but the actual manicure is always gorgeous. Their pedi added might put you over your price but they are so worth it.

My favorite place on the UWS is Nail by Young (72nd btwn Bway/Amsterdam and Columbus; on the 2nd floor; closed Sundays). Your typical nail shop but great prices, very consistent service, very thorough (w/r/t cuticles and such) and friendly staff (that has been there for years, not just passing through the place). A regular mani, spa pedicure, and 10 minute massage is around $50; there's also a shellac/gel deal like that for around $50, but I don't remember what exactly it is.

If she likes massages -- like intense, deep tissue, person-walking-on-your-back massages -- check out Super Magic Fingers (they have a midtown location and an UWS location; I've only been to the UWS one, but went there monthly for years). It's not a spa by any stretch of the imagination, and it definitely looks sketchy, but it's the best massage I've had in NYC and it's $45/hr (and they have a punch card - buy 10 get one free!).

For facials and other spa services, the Aveda Institute in Tribeca is great and has decent prices (because it's students).

Response by poster: These are all great, specific answers, and I appreciate them very much. I am probably just going to give her money and a list of places to try. Thanks!
