Is there a good guide to Windows Networking for dummies?

Network help needed... simple guide or checklist preferred. How do I make Windows 7 and Windows 10 talk to each other?

As always with IT issues, too much information has muddied the waters. I have four computers, three with Windows 10 and one with Windows 7. For whatever reason, the existing 'HOMEGROUP' belongs to the old Win7 machine but none of the new computers can connect to it. Ideally, I'd like to just use a regular Network and bypass the homegroup altogerher, but when I try and connect I'm asked for 'network credentials' which I cannot find.

Are there any sites that can talk me through this process at a very basic level? I'm out of my depth here.

'Network credentials' should just be an admin user on the Win7 box. Have you tried entering a Win7 user & password when asked for credentials? Failing that, this might help.

This page talks about sharing folders (without using homegroups) between Windows 7 machines, but the same technique might work for you.
