Best free video to iPod converter?

I have video files in various formats and want to put them on my iPod touch. I have upwards of 40 hours on airplanes looming in my near future and those hours will go much faster if I can watch delightful TV shows and engaging movie content.

I used to use Vuze's built-in converter, but I got fed up with Vuze's shady ways and shitcanned its devious ass. A similar question was asked back in 2010, but I'm assuming things have changed since then.

Now what?

Best answer: Handbrake and WinFF are free tools that will allow you to convert videos. I've also used SmartConverter to convert videos on OS X.

I use the VLC for iOS app - I can drag .avi files directly into the app folder via ITunes, and watch what I like on the go without having to convert it. (I believe the VLC app also supports .mp4 and other common formats, I just happen to use .avi).

Not sure if it is just me but handbrake has been crashing lots when I try to encode videos for the iPad. Some work, some don't. It's become super annoying.

If you have the storage space then go for VLC. Be warned though that DTS/AC3 audio cannot be played due to Dolby licencing issues. You can convert the audio to MP3 to solve this though.

Response by poster: Handbrake is working like a charm for me. Thanks again, AskMe, and especially rhizome and neushoorn!
