What should we name our dog?

If everything goes smoothly over the next week, this awesome dog will be joining our family. Could you help us think of a great name for him?

The shelter thinks he's a Retriever/Lab/Boxer mix of some kind, although I think he looks a little like a Black Mouth Cur or some other kind of large hound. Regardless, what's really important is that he's a big, good-natured, friendly guy who loves people and other dogs. He's apparently a quick learner and definitely a goofball. It's a little hard to tell in the pictures, but he's sort of a tawny red.

Anyway! TL;DR he's great.

The shelter calls him Andy, but:
1) he doesn't really respond to Andy yet and
2) we have several friends named Andrew, one of whom goes by Andy.

We like the idea of a historical, mythological, literary, or just generally old-timey name but are having trouble coming up with names that both fit him and don't seem pretentious. We've been throwing around 'Argus,' but are concerned that it might be a little too heavy for such a sweet, cheerful guy.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!

Buster! It's not an intellectual name but it's what I immediately thought of when I saw your dog. (He already looks so sweet and devoted to you!)

[Edit: dismas literally just beat me to the punch but it goes to show that Buster could be a fitting name!]

But look at him get his attention. Go through the alphabet until he responds to the first sound of his real name. Then add a vowel. Then some more. You might come up witb his real name.

I've suggested this before, but only because it is such a fantastic dog name AND it is literary, historical AND old-timey.
CHAUCER!
Because Chaucer is such a noble and dignified name for an older dog, but when you say it with affection and relish it fits a goofy youngster perfectly.

I always encourage multi-part names, like something that starts with Sir or St.

my bunny is named Plump Nugget, but I can call her Nugget or P-Nug for short.

I am certain that when I have a dog I will name him/her Bill the Pony (Lord of the Rings), or Pony for short.
