"You cry baby, you cry!"

Does anyone remember a western where there is a scene in which a woman is holding a crying baby and they are surrounded by coyotes or wolves?

The back story is that the woman had once been in a situation were she was holding a baby (maybe her own) and they were hiding from some dangerous people and she covers the babies mouth to stop the baby crying and the baby dies.

Then there is a scene where she and a child she has adopted along their travels are surrounded by wolves or coyotes and the child keeps crying and she just says something like "you keep crying baby!" I can't remember what it was exactly but I was thinking about that scene and wishing I knew what movie it was and what the actual quote was. If anyone knows what movie this was let me know! There's a guy in the movie she's teamed up with as well and I think he turns up to save them from the solves/coyotes but I don't remember a whole lot of the movie. Thanks.

Response by poster: I guess after 20 minutes of googling without results all I had to do was post this question then I found it. LOL

The scene was from Quigley Down Under.

Response by poster: I feel I should correct though- she saves herself and the child like a badass-- there's no man doing that here.

I seem to remember a MASH episode where a bunch of people are fleeing and the mother smothers the baby to death to save the group.

Yeah, it pops up in Mash and also in some other "hiding from the Nazis" flashback in another series. It's a pretty widely re-used story because it's so horrible - mother murdering her baby to save the wider group. I have no idea why writers like it so much.

I was going to say Quigley too - that was an incredibly memorable scene, even though I can't remember the rest of the movie.

That was actually Hawkeye remembering the incident to Sidney Friedman, the shrink. It happened on a bus when a soldier had come on board. Hawkeye remembered it being a chicken, and his breakthrough came when he remembered it had been a baby.

FWIW, I think the specific version that shows up in Quigley is a a trope from much older Western genre stuff, and maybe from American frontier folklore. I remember it from reading stuff as a kid. I think.
