I'd like to cosplay Hattori Hanzo in Kill Bill (played by Sonny Chiba)

Here's one photo. Leather black sandals, loose cotton khaki pants, simple cotton apron, white tank top undershirt. All these are straightforward. I need help with...

1. What is that shirt style? Is it a uniform shirt? work shirt? Japanese shirt, smock, etc has not helped me. Kind of a kimono style, but not really. I don't know what I'm looking for there. If not the shirt, then a pattern idea for the shirt would be useful because I'd love to match the print as closely as possible. What does is that pattern called?
2. Headband. I feel like I've seen this style of fold - is it simply twisted and tied? It only really has to look right so this is pretty easy.
3. How do I get a hold of a quality (TOY!) samurai sword? Is there a good brand?
4. What's the best way to split a baseball in half so that it is precisely and cleanly in half and won't fall apart. It's been a while since I dismantled a baseball but I vaguely remember that they get stringy and really fall apart when you open them up.

Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks!

Best answer: 1. It is a Sushi Chef shirt. e.g.
2. Headband- I think this is probably two thin pieces of fabric rolled up or twisted.

Best answer: The shirt is a shushi chef jacket. Here's one that is identical, but I have no idea if that retailer is reputable.

The headband is called hachimaki. Here's how to roll one (scroll down a bit). You'll have to find the right fabric, or twist two together, to make it look right.

As for the half baseball -- I wonder what would happen if you got one of these things, then cut off the webbed part? I have no idea what the underside looks like.

Best answer: For the baseball: the last post here shows how someone did it with a bandsaw. Basically drilled out two pieces of scrap wood so that you could screw them together and secure the ball, then straight through a fine-toothed bandsaw.

For the katana: depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. Are you just after something chintzy and plastic, or a proper prop-type thing? Dollar stores/costume shops will be a good bet for the former, while the latter blows out depending on what your budget is, where you're at, etc.

Best answer: How about a wooden practice katana, a.k.a. a bokken?

Perhaps carrying a katana is like carrying a baseball bat - one should be concerned if the police or prosecutor would see it as an illegal weapon under local or state law.

Best answer: The headband is most probably a tenugui. They're simple unhemmed strips of cotton around 90cm x 34cm, if you don't want to buy one (if you do it yourself you can make it longer if your head is large-ish). Scroll down on this page to the "breezy headband" to see how it's styled in the movie still: just rolled up tightly and tied.

Response by poster: Incredible answers everyone. I like the idea of the bokken - perhaps I'll paint it, the weight is meant to feel right. Not so plasticy as a toy perhaps.

Funny enough Bun-ka-do is a shop with the sushi jacket is a store I've been to in Little Tokyo (L.A.) many times in the last 30 years. I'm in San Diego so that's too long a distance for browsing. But that should do nicely.

As far as walking around with a weapon I'm fully aware that's a dodgy prospect. A local college campus had a lockdown a few months ago because a fellow had a non-folding black umbrella with him and it was misinterpreted.

Thank you so much. I'd love to convince someone to play Miss Kiddo.

Well, it's not super useful to you in SD, but there's also this katana umbrella which could come in handy for others in less-ideal climates.

Response by poster: a halcyon day not super useful, but pretty awesome!
