My microphone with my new headset suddenly stopped working.

So I bought a new logitech headset with headphones and a mic recently to communicate with friends on steam. When I first got it, everything was working, and then the other day my friend says he can't hear me, although I can still hear him through the headphones.

I did nothing to change the settings for Sound in the Control Panel (external mic at left side is the default). I tried to record something using the sound recorder but that didn't work either. When I tried to record a file using the internal mic, however, it did work, but my friend still couldn't hear me on steam. When I disable the external mic at left side device in Sound, however, the small amount of static background noise I normally hear from my headphones disappears. I'm using an HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8.1 installed. I've tried restarting my computer, checking for windows updates, and googling around, but I still can't seem to solve the problem. Is there anyone out there who feels like they know what the solution might be?

Can you do a system restore to the last time it worked? Can you test the mic on another computer to make sure the headset isn't broken?

I have a Logitech headset and mic on Win 8.1 and it will do this from time to time - unplugging the usb and plugging it back in sometimes works; failing that, a quick reboot always works.

If I'm in a google hangout, adjusting the settings and saving them there (even if you don't make any real changes) rather than Windows/control panel will also sometimes work - not sure how this translates to Steam.

To check if the headset mic has itself failed, I'd find another computer to try it on.
And not to be insulting, but I'd also check that the mute button on the headset wasn't accidentally on, as that's a mistake I've made before.

What specific model of headset do you have? Echoing the above that for logitech USB headsets, replugging them seems to help. I don't have steam on this computer to check, but also a good idea to check that whatever game you're using, or steam itself, is set to use the correct microphone device.
