Trying to Find a Movie

I've seen "find that vaguely remember movie magic" happen here before with only the slightest of clues, so here goes. My wife and I watched a movie back in 2001. I'd say it came out within five years prior to that date.

We watched it on VHS, and it was sort of an unconventional love story set in the current day. It felt more like an indie movie, not a big budget production. A man meets a woman (both in early 20s at the latest) in a rural area, I believe on a farm owned by her family (he's a friend of someone in her family?), and I believe that he worked there, or helped out, or stopped by occasionally to contribute because he liked this woman. The first part of the story picks up slowly as they get to know each other, and it's a sweet story. You get the feeling that there's a real connection between them as they start a relationship.

Then, unexpectedly, things turn kind of sour, but it's from the perspective of the man trying to figure out what happened. It ends up that the woman slept with another guy at a local party, and it feels like a bit of a gut punch to the viewer based on how you interpreted the story up until that point, as you don't expect it. I don't recall how it ends. I do remember one scene earlier on where they are in a hot tub when things are going well, and he jumps in and makes a splash.

I do remember that the movie box was on the brownish end of the spectrum (I think both the man and woman are on the cover), like you would interpret it as being Fall, maybe towards evening. It wasn't a thriller or an intense drama, just a story about this relationship dynamic between two people you thought were going to do well together, and then it goes south.

If this rings any bells, and if AskMeFi can do its magic, it'll save me a lot of wondering. Thanks!

Response by poster: Oh wow, that's it. Less than 10 minutes, and I've been thinking about this for months. The speed at figuring out the obscure here never seems to amaze me. What's even more amazing is that I muddled up a number of the plot points, and the date, and you still got it!

I just watched the trailer, and it actually includes the hot tub. Thank you!
