Name My Derby Alter Ego
April 19, 2015 9:09 AM   Subscribe

I will have occasion in the next couple of whiles to pick a roller derby name. My top 2 choices (Eleanor Bruisevelt and Hermione Danger) are already in use. And here I thought I was clever. Hope me!

My current frontrunner is Ruthless Bader Ginsberg, but it's enough of a mouthful (and possibly too evocative of Ellen Page's character in Whip It) that I am casting about for other options.

My name is Lucia, and I am open to names that include it, but somehow it's harder for me to pun on my own name than on others'.

I like literary references, particularly to children's/YA books (Beatrix Slaughter and Malice in Wonderland are already taken, alas!) I am a middle school math/science teacher, so that's another direction to go.

Name me, MeFi!

From the science side:
Marie Fury; Sally Rude; Ada Loveless; Pain Goodall

Also, Lucia Van Pelt popped in to my head just now.

Edit: dang, just looked at that link and looks like 3/5 of mine are in use (Sally, Marie, and Ada)

I am terrible with rollerskates, and thus will never be able to use my preferred name: Killvia Shankhurst

Possibly less relevant if British suffragette history is not your bag.

for what it's worth, that list hasn't been updated since 2012 and I don't think it's taken that seriously any more. When I started it was VERY SRS BSNS but that was eight years ago and the sport has grown so much since then it's impossible to keep track of everyone. I'm pretty sure my (former) league doesn't bother to register names any more. I would probably just google any name you're considering and as long as it's not taken by a top-level WFTDA skater or someone else historically or currently notable it's probably fair game (of course YMMV and your league may insist on no duplicates). There's a lot of retired skaters on the list, three years is a long time in roller derby.

It's no fun if you're not an old movie buff (or, I guess, into burlesque) but I discovered a couple of weeks ago that June Havoc has gone mysteriously unclaimed. (I must say that J.K. Brawling is frigging fantastic.)

Apparently no one has claimed Helen Killer or Helen Kill-Her (Helen Keller). The mind boggles.

Phyllis Killer (Phyllis Diller), however, is taken.

You can technically reuse names, especially if you get in touch with the original 'owner'. I got super excited when I read your question because Hermione Danger is in my league, but then when I checked two evils I realized that the name was registered to someone else (I see now that you are in Chicago as well). Derby is becoming so big that it's hard to find a unique name these days.

On the other hand, Metafilter gave me my derby name, so it's a great place for ideas ;)

Response by poster: Oh, man, these are great. I love JK Brawling and Killvia Plath.

Just came up with Hellinor Smashwood and Rosalind Shanklin...
posted by sockpaperscissors at 7:08 PM on April 20, 2015

I'm pretty sure there was a JK Brawling on Tumblr a while back, so I recommend to Google around and not rely on TwoEvils. Look on Facebook too -- yes, there's the "real name" crackdown, but a lot of derby girls will use the "nickname" function.

My standard advice is to also think about what you'll get called for short. No one in the league is going to use your full name when they're talking to you or referring to you. You'll get it on your jersey, perhaps your helmet, and in the program/on the website. But on a regular basis, you'll get called something short and easy to yell when you have a mouthguard in.

If you were "Hellinor Smashwood", I feel like you'd get called "Smash", and if you were "Rosalind Shanklin", "Shank". So would you be okay with being called Smash or Shank?
