Books of secret knowledge

What was this book or books of secret knowledge I read in the late '80s/early '90s?
Back in the late '80s/early '90s I read a book (and maybe a followup) about secret knowledge of all sorts. Things like "there are levels of classification above TOP SECRET" and "most of the semen you see in porn movies is actually soap". It was the kind of thing that might have, a few years later, ended up on alt.folklore.urban or Snopes, but it wasn't one of the classic books on urban folklore. Googling has been fruitless. Any help?

Fun fact: William Poundstone and Paula Poundstone are cousins.

Didn't he also produce some monthly newsletters? I remember them being a little more mainstream than the books, more about booking flights through a third city to save money than about numbers stations and phreaking.
