Where can I buy Dutch Crunch bread in SF to make my own sandwiches?

I want to make sandwiches for work on Dutch Crunch bread -- it's amazing. However, the only places I've had it are sandwich shops that are selling finished sandwiches, not the bread itself. Please tell me where in SF I can buy loaves of this crunchy goodness!

I'd never heard of it, so I was compelled to Google. I came across this thread on Serious Eats which has some discussion of places that have it. One person mentions seeing it in Safeway. The thread is a few years old, but maybe still helpful.

Response by poster: Thanks primethyme -- I saw that thread too. I haven't seen any at the Safeway near me so I'm hoping other Bay Area MeFites have had actual sightings...

The sandwich shop may be willing to sell you a loaf. I work for a deli and we sell loaves of our rye, challah and pumpernickel all the time.

Huh, I've seen it at Safeway in SF--the Bernal Heights and 4th and King ones at least. In the bakery section where they sell individual bagels and cookies and stuff.

These guys in Marin used to make it in sub-shaped rolls, and still do, as far as I know. I'm sure that they could tell you who they sell to near you. Likewise, you might do well to ask the sandwich places that you've seen them at and ask who their baker is.

They for sure sell it at Draegers in the form of sandwich rolls from their in-house bakery. Closest to you might be in San Mateo.

If you ever get down to the peninsula, stop by a Le Boulanger (different from the Starbucks chain!); I'm pretty sure they'll sell you some. I could've sworn they had locations in the city too but it appears not.

Yeah, my Diamond Heights Safeway has it. I think it's in roll form though, not loaves.

Response by poster: Thanks all, I'm so excited to try these -- I went to the Safeway in Bernal but didn't see it, but I bet I was looking in the wrong section.

I feel like I've seen it in every Safeway I've been to.

Incidentally, I once saw some in Amsterdam, where obviously they don't call it Dutch Crunch, so I asked what they do call it. There it's Tijgerbrood (tiger bread). (I was actually a little surprised that it was actually Dutch instead of that just being some dumb marketing ruse or something.)

At Safeway, look not in the bread shelves, but in the bins along the counter behind where cakes and baguettes are.

The Safeway answers are correct.

You can always ask your local sandwich shop who provides their bread as well. Usually they're pretty large bakeries who also sell to retail outlets.

Semifreddi's makes a dutch crunch sandwich roll sold all over the place

I haven found dutch crunch at Whole Foods, granted this was Oakland, but I am sure one of the one in the city has it.

I've seen Dutch Crunch Rolls at my local Safeway (Marin, CA).
But since you're in SF, you should make friends with ACME BREAD.

We call that Tiger Bread in England too in case that helps you to search.

Safeway and Whole Foods in SF/Bay Area both sell it. It's in the bakery department along the edge of the store, usually near the fresh baguettes.

I've definitely seen them in the Safeway bakery; they're usually in the area where bulk rolls, bagels and baguettes are.

I'm pretty sure Semifreddi makes it in roll form, places that sell their rolls often have it. I know I've seen it in bulk at Berkeley Bowl. Every time I've bought it though it good stale/moldy really quickly, which makes sense considering they style of bread and the lack of preservatives.
