Do Madrid subway stations have escalators?

All the same, mixed, random?

Yes. The Metro de Madrid has more escalators than any other underground railway.

Recently we had to go from the Airport to Atocha with two large bags, making line connections, and found several places where we had to carry our bags down stairs because there were no escalators and the elevators were not nearby.

Some do, some don't. Some only have escalators or elevators on one platform! So check that link above so you will be prepared and get out on the correct side of the train car.

I always take a taxi (some 30€) between Atocha and the airport because of the one time I didn't. That's one traject that could be improved.
