It's sad and it's sweet, and I knew it complete...

Inspired by yesterdays post about forgotten 90s songs: I have a tantalizing musical memory, on the cusp of being forgotten altogether:
To wit: this was a song from the early 90s, a sort of indie rock or Riot Girl song with sugary female vocals, and the only thing I remember is a chorus or refrain that includes the line: "I turned the tide" over and over again.

I totally know what song you're talking about, and I can't remember the name or artist either. I think the lyrics might be slightly off - like, it's not "tide" but I can't remember what it is. But I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about, it's locked up in my head somewhere too.
"Iiiiiiiii turned the tide."

Response by poster: Definitely not Blondie or Ace of Base. It wasn't pop, this had sort of jangly guitars (think Lush or early Breeders) and two singers or multitracked vocals. Might have been a local or regional group that never made it...

When you say sugary girly voice I think of the Murmurs (their most famous song was You Suck if that rings a bell?), but I don't know if any of their others has the lyric you remember.

If it's a misremembered lyric, as maryr suggests, could you be thinking of The Sign, by Ace of Base?

not the same lyrics but similar sounding words: nothing natural?
