What's this "dam" movie from our childhood?

On Christmas day my brother and I were reminiscing about a movie we both remember bits from but not its name.

I'm hoping someone of our vintage (kids in the 70s/80s) might recall seeing it?

All I have is there are a bunch of kids jumping into the water in an abandoned quarry or maybe a dam. There's an old fridge that's been dumped in the water and one of the kids swims into it and the door closes and he gets stuck. That's all I remember, but my brother also remembers that there's some kind of mechanical monster in the water too.

If it rings any bells, we'd love to know what this movie was called. Thanks!

I think it is Breaking Away.

The other option, which has the "monster" is The Quest.

I believe the fridge in the quarry in Breaking Away had no back, somehow - a guy goes in, the door is closed, audience gasps but he swims out the back, nobody gets hurt. And only the Cutters swam at the quarry, this was their place, no students from the university would've been there.

Best answer: Seymour Zamboni and Rash are both half-remembering Breaking Away, which kind of fits your description but definitely doesn't have a monster.

In one scene, the four protagonists are swimming at the quarry, jumping off some rocks. One swims down into an old fridge and the door closes behind him. The other characters talk a bit more, then get worried when the first one hasn't resurfaced. They panic and jump in after him. He pops up behind them, and says "It's got no back on it." At the end of the scene, the college kids show up at the top of the quarry, making a lot of noise, and one dives in from the very top. One of the protagonists remarks "I've never seen anyone dive in from up there."

Later in the movie is the scene where one of the protagonists challenges one of the college kids to a race, loses badly, and hits his head on a rock.

The Quest was released in different countries with different names, including Frog Dreaming and The Go-Kids. That's got to be it.

I was going to say Frog Dreaming/The Quest as well. I can't remember any scene with a fridge (although the pond is filled with all sorts of thrown away stuff), but it does end with a mechanical monster of sorts.

Response by poster: Thanks for all the responses. I have a feeling my brother and I may be remembering different movies and blending them into one.

We're going to check out Breaking Away and The Quest to figure it out. Thanks guys.
