Uniquely fun restaurant and bar recommendations in midtown Manhattan?

I'll be coming to NYC from Jan. 1-4 with some fun party people in tow, primarily to see the Gogol Bordello show on Jan. 2. I was wondering if any kind Mefites might have some recommendations.

We're looking for delicious, relatively inexpensive Eastern European (or otherwise intriguingly offbeat) restaurants, as well as quirky and entertaining bars/lounges in which to eat and imbibe. Our hotel is at 6th Ave. and W. 30th St. and we're hoping to keep things relatively local, but don't mind travelling for something that's worth the trip. Thanks very much!

The Russian stuff is pretty pricy, so go for Ukrainian. The East Village is local enough, right?

Ukrainian National Home at 140 2nd Ave.

Veselka is another option.

Now I have to cook the dishes of my ancestors.

Oda Houseon Avenue B is worth a visit. They will acommodate large groups (you should probably call though because the restaurant is small). They often have live music and the owners and staff are so friendly. Most importantly, you can eat khachapuri- which is so delicious that I dream about it. A visit Oda House will definitely complement the vibe of a Gogo Bordello show. The last time I was there, a large party was under way and the guests were all singing Georgian songs together it was lovely!

Came to say Veselka, so now I'll just second it

I suggest food at Ukrainian National Home, and maybe drinks at Pravda, for the horseradish-infused vodka with a quail egg. (Veselka has its fun aspects, but the space is pretty sterile-looking. Not a quirky/offbeat vibe, more upscale-ish diner.)

Response by poster: These look great, thank you! Anything else in terms of proper bars people might recommend?

Barwise, there's an outpost of Barcade on 24th between 6th and 7th, so reasonably close to your hotel.

Russian Vodka Room. Try the horseradish vodka.
