How to resolve Google Chrome bookmarks bug?

I'm wondering if anyone has a simple fix for resolving a major bookmark syncing problem with Chrome. For whatever reason Chrome duplicates bookmarks, so much so that it affects the performance of my browser. The only fix I have been able to find is that I should disconnect my Android Chrome profile from my desktop profile, but that seems to defeat the purpose of have a Chrome profile. Any thoughts?

I have one main Chrome profile that is connected to my Gmail account. This is the same profile I use on my Nexus phone, and on my Nexus tablet. I also use the same profile on an "away" machine I use at work. So that's four devices - two desktop, two mobile.

The challenge I have is wonky syncing. On my main computer I have noticed Chrome duplicating hundreds of copies of the same bookmark. I use the Bookmarks Manager to delete them, but they always reappear.

Another more minor irritant is that if I use my "away" machine, an older version of bookmarks will be restored on the "away" machine's Chrome profile and then on my main computer's Chrome profile.

I've read this is an issue with Chrome, and the best thing to do is to disconnect mobile Chrome browser. I suppose that is an option, but it seems rather strange. FWIW I use mobile Chrome to access just a few sites - some magazine subscriptions and so on.

If anyone has any insights it would be great!

My version of Chrome on my main computer is:

Version 39.0.2171.95 m

When I had this problem it was because I was simultaneously using Foxmarks to sync between my Chrome and Firefox bookmarks. Maybe check the extensions you have installed and make sure nothing similar is happening?

There are a few hits on Google for Chrome and duplicate bookmarks, and like matildatakesovertheworld most suggest that the issue was with an extension, particularly sync extensions. I would look at any bookmark related extensions first, then check the chrome bug reports.

Response by poster: Unfortunately the only way to fix this problem seems to be to sign out of my mobile accounts.
