Collectible plate features imprint from defunct department store- how old is it?

The front of the plate (8" diameter) has roses on it and a scalloped edge; on the back is printed in gold, "Sanberg's Department Store, Outfitters for Men, Women and Children, Fayette City PA". Perhaps it was a promotional item.

The internets give me nothing; I only found out that Fayette City population is currently only around 700 but in the 1920's it had over 2000 residents. I would hazard a guess that's when it would have had enough traffic to support a department store.

Anyone have any knowledge? I'm just wondering how old and or rare this plate may be.

Might it be Samberg's and not Sanberg's? I found an apparent hit for Samberg's Department Store in the Uniontown, PA, paper dated April 1917. It's behind newspaperarchive.com's ridiculous paywall, though. Fayette City is less than 20 miles from Uniontown.

I searched through some university library databases for Sanberg and Samberg and found nothing.

(Another option for you is to call a local library -- doesn't look like Fayette City has one, so maybe try the county seat -- and ask a librarian how you might access a Sanborn map or city directory from around 1917.)

Response by poster: No, it's definitely Sanberg's. Unless the printing itself is an error. :-)

The Sanborn maps for Fayette City are available here. My quick look at them didn't list a department store of any name.

Best answer: Here is a newspaper from 1964 with an ad stating that "Samberg's" is leaving Fayette City forever. If they store was only around for 40 years, the available Sanborn maps don't reach that date.

Response by poster: Buttercup, I have to assume that's it and my plate is a misprint. I wonder if that makes it more or less valuable?
