Hair help for a new step-dad.

My new 12 year old step daughter is really into new hairstyles, the funkier the better. I have seen an amazing 'do on a girl her age and would like to re-create it for her. I have already straw-polled her friends, but none of them had heard if such a style. Description over the page.

Looking at the head from above, with her facing away from you, I.e looking in the same direction. The plait was flat to the scalp starting at the top right corner. The plait went diagonally across the scalp to the bottom lef corner becoming a seperate plait that sat behind her left ear. All the rest if her hair was loose.
As I have no children "of my own" please understand I know *nothing* about doing a twelve year old girl's hair!

Best answer: Sounds like a waterfall braid to me!

If you're not already adept at French braids and the like, you might want to treat her to a trip to the hairstylist for this.

Get on over to the braided hairstyle tutorials on Pinterest! I'm in my 30s and have finally learned how to braid hair in interesting ways due to Pinterest tutorials.

Oh, and you are an effing awesome parent for asking this question.

The first braid demonstrated here is a variation on the waterfall braid Hermione Granger linked, but looks like it'd be a little more secure. (And the second braid added on is cute, too.)

If this was just a regular French braid that went across her head diagonally, that should be pretty easy with a bit of practice at French braiding (see tutorials on YouTube)!

If it was a braid that sort of stuck out from her head a bit (like a braid taped to her hair), search Dutch braid!

No idea tbh but what I used to love as a teen with my (single) dad was him attempting (badly) to plait/style my hair and his single dad friend doing his daughters hair and competing who was the best/worst. Could be fun en route to mastering it :)

You're an awesome parent!

Basically what you're looking for is a variation on Katniss' hairstyle from the first Hunger Games movie, with some left free. Here is a video tutorial on how to do the whole thing. If you google 'Katniss arena braid' you should be able to find a whole bunch of photos that will help you when you take her to a hairstylist. It's going to be simpler that way, for one; you'll get a better result; and it's always a really fun treat to go get something done the way a grownup does.

Best answer: If you want a one-time result today or for a special occasion, yes, take her to someone to do it.

If you want it to be repeatable or as a way to spend time together and chat while you're working on her hair, it's time to learn. Pinterest and Youtube will help. If you have trouble getting the hang to start with of "how to hold everything in your hands while braiding", then ask someone who can show you in-person so you can see how they're holding it, up close.

It'll take some practice and learning on your part, but let me assure you, guys who can braid are gold, pure gold.

Pinterest is going to be your best resource in finding trendy hairdo's. (And I agree that this sounds like a variation on Katniss' style.)

Response by poster: Thanks for all the answers guys! Online tutorials seem to be the way forward and although I haven't got hold of her yet (she has a busy social life at weekends) I reckon I could do a waterfall braid for starters. Although, this is not what the girl on the bus had. I will use my imagination, and work up to that one.
