What is a good magic kit for a 8 1/2 year old?

I'm looking for a magic kit for my son who is 8 1/2. I'd like a kit that has lots of actual physical tricks, not one containing an instruction book that teaches tricks that are mostly not included with the kit. Also - I'd like tricks that are good quality - not cheap and junky plastic. Lastly, they need to be the self-working variety that don't require any sleight of hand. Recommendations for brands that fit the bill and brands to stay away from are welcome.
The Dover self-working magic books are pretty good, and they have some packaged as a kit with handkerchiefs and cards.

Seconding the Melissa & Doug one. My son had that at 7 and loved it.

Thirding the Melissa and Doug one. It's good quality. We gave it to our friends' son for his 8th birthday and he loves it.
