One of my favorite bands is the Japanese rock group The Pillows. I'd love to find other artists/bands with a similar musical style, but haven't had much luck so far. Does anyone familiar with their music have any recommendations? I'm particularly interested in finding American bands that fit, but anywhere from around the globe is great too.

This is why God created Pandora.

Pandora doesn't seem to know The Pillows.

This might help you.

Another trio you might enjoy is The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The best albums to start with are Extra Width and Orange.

Fooly Cooly made me fall in love with The Pillows.

Unfortunately, I can't think of anything exactly like their sound.

Maybe Placebo? Or Jets to Brazil? Those really don't have The Pillows' buoyancy though....actually, I just listened to "Advice" again from the FLCL soundtrack and really--there's nothing else quite like The Pillows. :-)

Well, supposedly they were heavily influenced by the Pixies, but with the exception of "Here Comes Your Man" the similarities are slim.

I can't really think of any other English bands that have a similar sound... You may want to check out the Japanese rock scene a bit, though. It tends to be marginalized in the US by all the mindless, crappy J-Pop that anime fans like to listen to, but there's a lot of good stuff out there. Husking Bee comes to mind, but there's tons of them. I would suggest downloading Soulseek, finding someone with a lot of Pillows and looking through the rest of their files. Sometimes they'll have a lot of other things as well. If you'd like to look through mine, email me and I'll try to turn it on.

Also, I don't know how much of them you've actually heard, but the Pillows have something like twelve albums.

Are you able to upload an indicative song or two to yousendit.com so people can hear it and maybe make suggestions?

Love Psychedelico is another Japanese band with a similar sound and one of my favorites.

Hmmm...I'm trying to think of another band that sounds like them, but I can't think of an appropriate mix of jangly pop music and grunge...

They're a bit more new-wavey, but you might like Supercar...

J-pop meets anthemic jangle? Well, removing the Japanese part of the equation, there's millions of bands like this.
Let's start you off easy, with Coax and Boyracer, and move you up through The Posies, Spoon, Boo Radleys, Chimera, Divine Comedy, Her Tears, Cotton Mather, You and What Army, Me, Stretford, The Fletcher Pratt, Atomic Numbers and The Rasberries. You might also try Sloan. Write me if you need more.

Here's another one. "Advice".

Not at all J-pop--except for the accent, not noticeably Japanese.

Check out Penpals, Charcoal Filter, Road of Major, Supercar (totally different style, but I can:t help but pimp them, they:re one of my favorites), Oblivion Dust, Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her, B-Dash, Mongol 800, Bump of Chicken...

All of the above are Japanese, although almost everything by Oblivion Dust and SSKHKH is sung in English. A good portion of Mongol 800 is as well.

Love Pyschedelico, although incredibly good and one of my favorites, doesn:t much match up with The Pillows in my mind. But check them out anyway.

I:ve got a pretty wide variety of Japanese music - if you:re interested in more, email me. Unfortunately, I:m not all that up-to-date on American/Western music right now, so I can:t help with that part of your question.

If the track that Hoto posted is more representative, then I advise you to look for Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Guitar Wolf, Afrorampa, Voodoo Boots and the 5-6-7-8s. Voodoo Boots and Guitar Wolf are a bit more lo-fi, but similar. All are from Japan.
