Will hyphens impact SEO if I bridge two words together as one?

So it looks like hyphens in domain names do mean lower positing in Google’s SERP but does this mean the same for keywords? For example, my site contains the word 'multi media' but I would like to change that to 'multimedia' on every occurance. Is this ok? Will it impact my SEO?

Multimedia is generally used as a single word so moving from the less common "multi media" to "multimedia" should be good. (Note: US based person)

Are we talking domain names? If so, Google might punish duplicate content on various domains; e.g.: you have random-multi-media.com and random-multimedia.com both with the same content (see here for more on that). Best suggestion here: redirect (301) one domain to the other, so that there is basically only one domain (whichever you prefer) available. You can do this even if you already have a good Google standing for one URL.

If we are talking text, then it basically doesn't matter much because Google treats "multi media" and "multimedia" mostly the same. In a short test it even suggested the second version when searching for the first.

I'm an American too, but I can tell you the British are also much more likely to write "multimedia" (almost 50 million Google results on .co.uk sites) than "multi media" (less than a million). If you remove the British filter, "multimedia" is used in about 80 million results, while "multi media" is used in only about 2 million.

As you can see from the experiment in my previous comment, that's not true. Go ahead and Google them. "Multimedia" as one word is far more popular.

I actually didi and when I searched for "multi media" (excluding the ") it will suggest mutlimedia and even display results for sites including multimedia. I know that the " writing will get other results but I find it hard to believe that this is the way multi media is searched for.

Best answer: It doesn't metter if you have hyphen or in url (from SEO point of view). But is better to have a short domain with no hyphen or digits because is :
1. Easier to remember
2. Look more professional
