Please help me remember this game!

I woke up this morning, for some reason having vivid memories of this side-scrolling arcade-style space-ship shooter PC game I used to love, and now I want to play it again. Can you help identify the game?

Below are some of the details I remember about it. I remember playing it maybe... 5 years ago? 6 or 7?
  • Downloaded from the internet (may or may not have been freeware)
  • Had a slightly 'cartoony' style of animation - bright colors, etc. but wasn't specifically kid-oriented
  • Although it was a space-shippy thing, the setting wasn't in space; it was a colorful, brightly lit world surface
  • Awesomely groovy synthesized electric guitar music
  • A number of worlds each comprised of 5(?) levels, each with a boss ship you had to destroy
  • Enemy ships came either singly or in a wave comprised of a formation pattern
  • Power-ups gave you extra guns, and sometimes a limited number of missiles and maybe lasers?
  • Text would pop up at the end of each level with your score, and the text looked like the letters were little balloons that would inflate, and then deflate / disappear
  • Bonus was awarded for destroying all enemy ships in a level while not losing any lives
Does anyone remember such a game? Thanks!
