IOS 8 installed, not functioning

I recently installed IOS 8 on my iPhone. Unlike some, I had no trouble with the download per se. However, none of the new features seem to be present; and while it says on the software update page that it has been downloaded, the little 'number 1' is still showing up on the settings page. FWIW, the iCloud backup button (with the option to turn it on or off) seems 'frozen' as well. Might anyone have any ideas?

Are you sure you installed it, and not just downloaded it? "Install Now" is a separate action under Settings-->General-->Software Update.

I no longer have any iPhone, but it's possible it has only been downloaded and not installed. Go to Settings -> General -> About and it should show you if your on iOS 7 or iOS 8.

iOS 8 blitzed my iPad something awful. The consensus seems to be not to activate the iCloud part just yet.

I didn't choose iCloud, and it still, somehow, managed to reset all the settings on my iPad to an account name I hadn't used for a couple months. I tried everything, and ended up on the phone with a weary tech who admitted he had spent the entire morning on the phone with people regretting their iOS 8 choices, and that he believed they might have somehow tied the upgrade to a slightly older database, since like mine, many found themselves with outdated id information. I literally had to recreate an old email account, switch my id back to it, verify it, get the iPad working with it, and then switch to the new one again.

I know I'm not alone in this -- I have received four raving and fairly incoherent emails from a family member who lost the use of their phone entirely for a day after upgrading. I'm not sure how that was solved, except that a phone call to Apple was also involved.

It's not much help, but I think the answer may be: this upgrade is buggy.

I'd just add that after you install it, which I believe has not happened yet on your device, prepare for very weird app behavior too. This is a huge upgrade and there are bugs in all directions.

If the 1 is showing up, all it means is that the package file that holds the installation has been downloaded. In order to install it, you need to click install now. The confirmation that it has been installed will be two fold - the 1 will disappear and 2 Under Settings>General>About - The version should read 8.0

FWIW, as I recall, for the last upgrade you clicked "download and install" and it did both things for you, rather than requesting a second click to initiate the install.

Sounds like you restored from an old backup.

dearleader (and everyone else considering upgrading), be absolutely sure you have a recent backup, either via iCloud or iTunes, before doing the upgrade (this goes for any iOS upgrade). You said the backup button is behaving strangely; I'd try to figure that out before installing the update, unless you're 100% confident you already have a recent backup.

If you are using iCloud Backup, it will only backup when the device is plugged into the power adapter, on, and within range of a wifi network it can connect to. This should happen pretty frequently for most people. But, for example, my wife was in the habit of charging her phone at her desk at work during the day instead of at home overnight. And her phone wasn't on the company wifi network. So she ended up going months without getting a successful backup without knowing it (I'm pretty sure it complains about that from time to time, but I guess she ignored it or misunderstood it).

FWIW (anecdotal obviously), I've updated 5 devices in my household without incident.

I downloaded the update overnight, and then I chose to do the install in the office the next morning, so they are definitely two separate actions. I believe that you get a prompt saying that the software is ready to install.

I've not had any problems after upgrading my 4S.

Settings -> General -> Software Update will also tell you what version you are using right now and if you have one ready to install.

I haven't updated my 4S, and I'm hesitant to, after reading all the negative press on how the older phones can't really take advantage of the operating system meant for the newer, larger phones.

Sounds like you restored from an old backup.

Except for the part where I have never backed up my iPad, this would be a good explanation.
