Need help with getting Chromecast to work with my mobile devices

I just set up a Chromecast. Casting from the Chrome browser on my Windows PC works fine, as does Youtube on my Android phone (Droid Maxx running 4.4.4). No other apps (tried Netflix, Google Play Music & Movies, and HBOGo) work (won't even show the cast icon). I also tried Netflix with an iPad (running iOS 7, but not the latest version) and it didn't allow me to cast either. But I am able to successfully see the Chromecast device from both my phone and iPad using the Chromecast app. What might be the problem?

Silly question, but all apps updated through their respective app stores?

Response by poster: Yes, everything is the latest version (except for the OS on the iPad, which is running an earlier version of iOS7).

Why wouldn't you want the latest version of iOS 7 if you're already running iOS 7? I think you should update that regardless. Maybe it will help with your problem, too.

Just reset the thing and redo the whole setup. Do it on a desktop browser, not on the mobile app.

As much as people love these things, i had a surprising amount of issues like this when i set one up for my partners parents. I eventually did a full "format and reinstall" like that where it checks for updates and redoes the whole setup, and it's worked great since.

Another thing worth noting, has it returned to the default random-rotating-photo background when you go to try and cast something? or is it still showing the youtube background. Because i've had issues with it not wanting to hand off unless it was at the main idle screen a few times...

You can't install ios 7 anymore, since ios 8 came out today. It wouldn't make a difference anyways, since this relies entirely on stuff within the apps which have the cast functionality baked in. If you have the latest apps, it's fine.

It plays nice with my partners phone, and she's an ios 6 holdout(still!)

Your router isn't relaying multicast packets. What router is it? Can you check if it has a multicast setting?

Best answer: I MeMailed the OP and they have a Cisco Aironet router which I think may not be routing multicast by default. See this thread: https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11235041/cisco-aironet-1142-ap-multicast.

I'm not 100% sure but I think this is it.

Response by poster: I have not had a chance to test the suggestion from GuyZero, but looks promising, and will update once I do, in case anyone is interested.

Response by poster: Got it working. Had to switch the Aironet to route traffic locally instead of through the wireless controller.
