Naked Limes in the City?

While I was visiting NYC with a friend, we found this weird naked-lime-looking plant outside of a bodega.

It was in the cut flowers buckets, alongside some red brain-coral-type flowers (that I've since looked up and identified), obviously for home decor. We asked the bodega's cashier what the plant was, but she didn't know.

The bulbs looked light and hollow and dented when poked lightly. The largest were maybe 2" across and all of them have soft, curved spikes. They really do look like naked (peeled) limes but had no scent (that we could discern). Sorry, the photo is a bit blurry; my camera was having issues that whole weekend.

Any ideas here?

Best answer: It's balloon plant, I think. More info here.

Response by poster: Thank you, acidic! My search terms didn't include balloon!
