Need streaming audio info.

I'm looking for a good source of info on selling subscription-based streaming audio.
I developed a website for a client to sell downloads, but he's looking ahead to eventually sell streaming content via web or native app. I'm interested in learning much more about the technical aspects of the project and my preference would be to build a web app for this, if possible. I see companies that sell streaming plans with a customizable app, but wonder if this is the best route to take.
I'm new to streaming. Help?
