Cheap car rental Albuquerque, NM?
September 3, 2014 6:29 AM   Subscribe

Going to the reservation in Albuquerque, NM for about 5 weeks. Checked online for price quotes on car rental - and the cheapest I found online was about $58 per day --which is too much across the span of 5 weeks. Will need a ride from the airport to the reservation; and for just general getting around purposes on weekends etc. Any help or advice on where or how to get a better rate? Thanks in advance for any information or help.

Have you checked rates in town? You'll pay a big premium for renting from the airport.

I did a quick check at budget.com and if you take a cab or shuttle into town it looks like you can get closer to $20/day (plus taxes/extras). I can't link but the 3501 PAN AMERICAN FREEWAY NE location is the one I happened to pick.

Try calling a few places. A lot of car rental agencies have special long-term or monthly rates but they don't usually show up in online searches.

I've had very good luck with Autoslash, and they do all the work for you. Can use them directly, or have them try to beat an existing reservation, as described here.

If you are a Costco member, check Costco Travel. They have a 'low cost finder' and you don’t need to be a Costco member to see the rental rates.

I asked a similar question a few years ago, the discount travel sites are your best bet, I ended up with one of those that doesn't tell you which company you're using until you pay, which I think makes it cheaper. $20/day is about what I paid. I got upgraded to a truck which was fun, but gas got expensive. You are going to be driving MANY miles with this car.

Call! I needed a car locally a few weeks ago, and the price I got by calling the branch was a lot cheaper than what the website quoted for the same branch and same days. Like, it was half the price.

I'm guessing you are just staying in a hotel on one of the various reservations close to Albuquerque.

Most of the resort or casino hotels will offer a shuttle to the airport. If you only want a car on weekends you could just take shuttle, taxi, or Uber to get your rental car instead of renting the car to have it just sit parked.

If you are staying in other housing away from the hotels you'll save a lot of hassle to rent a car even if it is parked much of the time.

Join Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. I use them exclusively for local car rentals (several a year) and my local neighborhood Hertz location averages about $15-20 a day, taxes INCLUDED, when I book as a Gold Plus member. Any coupon codes I enter raise the price, and booking through Hertz is always cheaper than using Hotwire/Priceline/etc. for me, unless I'm doing an airport pickup in a random city.
