Chicago: What to eat and see in the neighborhood near Northwestern University?
I'll be staying at the Millennium Knickerbocker (for a conference) and spending a few extra days doing research at the Newberry Library, both of which are on Walton St. I won't have a car so I'll be walking. I have to eat Chicago-style deep dish pizza, but other than that, I'm open. Interests are history, jazz, movies.

You might be interested in Chicago architecture Foundation walking tours, but they're downtown, as well. The CTA trip planner will help with the routes, if you're interested.

Do you mean NU's main Evanston campus or the lakeshore campus in the city?

Response by poster: The campus in the city. After looking at it on Google maps, I realized that.

Best answer: The lakeshore campus is walking distance (or a short cab ride) to both Pizzeria Uno and Due, which are the quintessential deep-dish places. I prefer to eat at Kevin, myself, but it's not a pizza place! there's a great coffee shop/ breakfast place/full bar on Dearborn at about Schiller , which I can't for the life of me think of the name of.
For things to see, you're not far from the Medinah Temple which was nicely restored and turned into the Bloomingdale's home store, and also the Museum of Contemporary Art right across the street from the lakeshore campus. the W lakeshore is right there, too, and I like their bar.
As for jazz, the Jazz Showcase is just about a mile from your hotel.

I was at the above-mentioned Pizzeria Uno a few months ago and be prepared to wait because it really does take an hour to get your food. The pizza was good, but don't go there if you're in a hurry.
