Commissioning a custom Lego minifigure?

Any advice on commissioning a custom Lego minifigure? My five-year-old son is hugely obsessed with Lego, and I'd like to have a custom minifigure made of a superhero character he's designed. I've found a few options online, but am wondering if anybody here has ever done this. Was it worth the money? Any vendors you'd recommend - or not? (I should note: I am far too uncoordinated to paint a minifigure myself.)

Best answer: It's been a few years, but when my son was into LEGO we ordered several custom items from Saber-Scorpion's Lair and were quite happy with everything. It looks like he's still in business. Have fun!

Best answer: Oh, man, that's such a great idea!

Look, you know your kid better than anyone, and I know when it comes to my stuff and especially stuff for my family, I am...very picky. Like, I obsess. I recently gifted my (21 year-old!) son some LOTR Lego sets, and I searched everywhere before deciding on some hard-to-find kits including Saruman and the Mouth of Sauron. He is having a ball with them.

If you're like me, you're going to want to see a lot of minifigs artists' work before you decide which way to go. This guy, faced with picking a custom minifigs designer, rounded up one hundred of them for an article.

Some are amazingly authentic, others go for the humorous side--well, you'll see what I mean. You will know which type best suits your son.

Good luck!
