What's a good Community Calendar option?

Hey, so I know this is the typical question where everyone says "Check Google" but I am having trouble finding a good shared calendar for a group of homeschoolers...
The idea is for everyone to be able to post events or interesting activities which would be pooled between people. It should be somewhat private to the group. I've tried several free options I found on the web but found the interface cumbersome and ugly. Google seemed to be the best bet but has been a bit of a pain to set up the account and users. Does anyone have any recommendations? i really don't need any social network features or complexity. Just a simple calendar that everyone can access and post events to....
