What were these purple children's records?

When I was a kid in the US in the early 80s, we had a series of children's stories on records. The one I particularly remember was about a colorful African warrior's shield, possibly told from a child's perspective. I'm pretty sure the album covers were purple. That's about all I've got. Any idea what the series or this particular story was?
Mom was an elementary teacher, so she could've gotten these from her school, or could've ordered them - she doesn't remember. I think they were 10" or 12" records.
