What's the weather like in NYC around St Patrick's Day?

My sister is getting married in the Conservatory Gardens, Central Park, in mid-March next year. Should we (the UK contingent) be packing umbrellas and warm coats?

Warm coats are usually called for. After living in Stamford for 8 years, I can attest to the fact that attending both our parade and the NYC parade required winter gear on more years than not.

You should absolutely be packing umbrellas and warm coats and hats and gloves. However, also pack for the eventuality of a 70 degree and sunny day, as that has happened a couple times in the last 10 years I've lived here.

I did a Google search for [new york city weather march] and found this.

Leave your orange overcoat at home, though. They take St. Patrick's day seriously in NYC.

God yeah, bring coat and brolly. I think it snowed this last March (although I could be misremembering, it might have been last year).

And don't worry about orange overcoats - you can certainly avoid the leprachaunerie entirely or go to the more down to earth parade out in Queens which seems to realize that us Irish people have entered 2005 and include gays and protestants among our numbers.

Five-day forecasts are fairly accurate: if I were leaving just a few days before the wedding, and not staying very long, I would decide what to bring based on the weather forecast.

I worked in midtown very close to the parade route for five years. Normal temperatures for St. Patrick's Day are still rather chilly (in the lower 50s during the day…40s during the night), and you should anticipate bringing a jacket, warm sweater, and maybe glove/scarf.

But I definitely remember at least two of the five past years during the parade where there was freakishly balmy weather during the day (low 70s). I also remember one parade of very cold rain. You just can't predict this sort of thing...

Heavy fronts of American people pretending to be Irish while wearing stupid hats. Showers of Guinness-coloured puke developing later.

No but seriously, it can still be pretty bloody cold in March in NYC. There can still be snow at that time of year; I'm generally still bussing up to Hunter to ski until pretty much the end of March. Pack coats and gloves.

Dress warm, and wear something that you won't mind getting vomit on.
