Help me remember the name of a Philip K. Dick story about molluscs

It's a relatively short one, and it concerns some type of land molluscs – snails or some other type of small creature that is typically regarded as "gross". I remember something about the shells being important. There's a twist in the end, possibly involving the nature of the molluscs. I can't remember much else – hence the AskMe!

The Crawlers maybe? The description makes them sound like slugs.

Response by poster: Beti, that sounds familiar, but I'm fairly certain there were shells featured prominently in the plot. I should also mention: I know this was in one of the large paperback PKD story collections.
