Post-assault PTSD resources in NYC?

A friend of mine was physically attacked while walking to the train station in NYC a couple of days ago. Can you recommend good, affordable PTSD counselling/care in NYC? More details under the cut (trigger warning for violence).

Details: my friend was assaulted seemingly at random by a gang of kids who jumped out of a car. He was kicked in the head over 10 times. He is physically mostly OK (has a concussion as well as cuts and bruises) but may need some help mentally/emotionally dealing with what happened to him.

He is British in the US on a work placement so has some insurance through that, but will need cheap/affordable care if possible. His partner has been looking into it but can only find resources for sexual assault, which might not be suitable. He and his partner are located in Brooklyn.

Please let me know anything you can think of. Memail me if you need to.

Best answer: I suggest that your friend get in touch with the New York State Office of Victim's Services.

He can arrange for free counseling and even financial compensation. This is one of the good things our taxes go for!

Best answer: He might have been a victim of the knockout game. This is horrifying. I'm so sorry.

The New York City Department of Health offers a free counseling line and other mental health services, as well as a list of other resources for PTSD [SLPDF].

I don't understand this question since even though I no longer live in NYC, I still remember we have pretty awesome Victim Services available.

Did your friend report this to the police??

It's not too late if they did not.

When you say "partner" is this a Britishism? Or do you mean same-sex partner??

I ask because (very distressing to me) there has been a lot of crimes against gays in NYC lately, and what happened to your friend might be a Federal Crime/FBI level shit.

Please urge your friend to contact the authorities if they have not already done so. Surely there were surveillance cameras nearby that recorded the car, the perps, or the incident on tape.

Please contact the police.

Thank you.

Response by poster: As far as I know my friend has contacted the police. This question is coming from his needing some mental health support and my figuring Mefi might be quite useful in suggesting some avenues we haven't considered.

My friend is not in a same-sex relationship and he was alone when he was attacked, so I don't think this was connected with any homophobic attacks. I think its much more likely to be the kind of "knockout" crime whimsicalnymph suggested.
