Recommendations for shoulder surgeon in NYC?

My son dislocated his shoulder and may require surgery. I am looking for an excellent surgeon in Manhattan.

My son (20 years old) probably needs shoulder surgery. After about six weeks of physical therapy, the orthopedist two hours upstate, where my son attends college, has said that surgery will probably be required, although the MRI results aren't in yet.

(Apparently when you dislocate your shoulder entirely it's certain that the labrum (the cartilage that holds in the shoulder) has been damaged and needs surgical repair).

I want my son to have the surgery in Manhattan, where we live, not upstate. I'm looking for the best surgeon to perform this operation. I've heard that the Hospital for Special Surgery is a great place (some family members have had procedures there) but I don't know names of doctors who specialize in shoulders.

Thank you for any recommendations.

I know you're looking for a personal recommendation here, but have you considered calling physical therapists in Manhattan and asking who they refer their clients to for shoulder surgeries? There are a lot of sports medicine-related physical therapists and surgeons in NYC.

As for the Hospital for Special Surgery: I've heard only good things about its doctors, but I don't have personal experience with them.

I have also seen Beth Shubin Stein, for a shoulder problem, but ultimately didn't need surgery.

I have a friend who had surgery for a labrum tear and she was very happy with Andrew Feldman.

I can't attest to shoulder surgeons (my issue was hand), but please do check out the Hospital for Special Surgery -- it's truly an excellent facility, attracts the best of the best, and you get to see pro-athletes from all over the world wandering around!

I highly recommend this surgeon at Columbia.
