Help me name my new cat?
October 15, 2013 5:54 PM   Subscribe

I adopted a new cat today and need help naming him. There's history here, so please check inside for details and pictures of existing cat and new cat.

About three years ago, I adopted a pair of brother cats. The black-and-white one I named Niko; the stripey one I named Jacob. These names were from the characters Niko and Jacob in Grand Theft Auto IV.

Much to my regret, Niko died about 6 months ago. Today, I adopted a new cat as a companion to Jacob and myself, and I need help coming up with a good name for him!

I don't think I want to continue the GTA IV naming scheme; my ideas so far are Maxwell (Max) or Zeke. But I'm not sold on either one of those, and would love to hear your thoughts.

Response by poster: Oh, I should add: NuCat is a male, about 6 months of age. He is tiny for his age but is both cuddly and energetic.

He's a Wallace or a Grommet to me. Bless his little sprightly toesies!

My fuzzes are all named after streets, and I am amazed by how much he looks like our little buddy Fairfax. Do you know anything about where he came from? Maybe an homage to his geographical roots? In any case, Fairfax mostly gets called Tiny, Wilshire is Fuzzy, and Pico is Boo.

Tuxedo cats = best cats. Congratulations on your new buddy.

New cat is tiny, but has the longest tail! It almost looks like it could help him fly. What about Mingus, after the winged cat in The Unwritten? Alternately, maybe Spandy, after cartoonist James Kochalka's late cat—that's what I named my router!

I'd suggest something that goes with another Jacob.
The only one I can think of is Jacob from LOST - so maybe Smoky, as in the smoke monster?
Or maybe another important character like Benjamin Linus, John Locke, etc?
If you know other Jacobs, feel free to substitute!

This way you have a new naming convention, and Jacob gets to keep his name. Everyone wins!

Oh I loooove his beard!! It is perfect! I say Carlos or Franco, or Jonathan

Response by poster: Oh, Jacob will be keeping his name no matter what. He's had it too long to change. Plus, that's his name =).

Response by poster: Bruce!

I sort of like that, but I'm afraid it's too close to Brucie, the homophobic steroid junkie from GTA IV =).

Even if that wasn't "who he is named after," it's what I would think of every time :P.

I'll repeat what I said earlier, you've been using NuCat frequently so I say shorten it and go with "Nuke"

I know you don't want to continue the GTA IV naming scheme, but naming him after someone from GTA V seems like an idea that needs to be considered. I kind of like Franklin.

So sorry to hear about Niko. He looks like he was a happy fellow.

I was thinking Esau, too. Or with that spiffy goatee, maybe Maynard.

If he ever grows into that tail, Lord help us all.

I am so sorry to hear your handsome Nico kitty is gone. These furry little weirdos really work their way right into your heart, don't they?

But thank goodness, now you have this adorable little tuxedoed guy to keep you and brother Jacob company again!

I don't suppose we want to go the Sparkly route and team Jacob up with a rival Edward, do we? No? Right, then perhaps Bond, as he is already suitably attired? Tuxedoes always make me think of James Bond.

Or Hugh, as the last bearded bloke I can recall seeing all dressed up and spiffy was Hugh Jackman. Bonus, Hugh cat and Nucat are just the tiniest sliver apart phonetically!

Or, if you like videogame names, for a rather cryptic reference to another guy in a black suit, name him "47".

You know who has the very bestest cat names, though? Greg Nog. Why is he not here, does he not know there is a cat thread going on?!

Well. If he were here, he would suggest something like...hmmm...lemme think. Tinybeard Pirate Cat? Tailnado Tux Tomcat? Something like that. ;)

Me, I would probably call your new little kitty Frank. Why? After Frank Beard. Because he has a beard! And it would make me giggle, since Frank Beard, ironically, is the only member of ZZ Top who is actually completely unbearded.

Jacob was Marley's first name in "A Christmas Carol," and since these two guys are going to be partners, maybe NuCat could be Ebenezer. Eb or Ben or Benny for short.

Also, "Tuxie McGee" is my standard casual nickname for all tuxedo cats.

However his schnozz markings also make me want to say Durante.

And his hairdo makes me think of Alfalfa. I think Alfalfa would be an amazing name for a cat.
