Looking for local cooperative games for any system, any genre.

I could really use suggestions for lengthy fun games that my gf and I can both enjoy together. Obtaining the games shouldn't be too difficult (I have most the systems besides current gen). Some examples of games we liked/didn't like inside.
What are the absolutely best local multiplayer experiences you can have? We mostly enjoy cooperative (Lego Star Wars was fun!) but sometimes competitive can be fun as well (we tried a few minutes of halo with scoring on, it was okay. Kid friendly/easy/intuitive is a plus). She also really likes pirate games.
Some games we liked so far:all Lego games, new super Mario, animal crossing (for a month), Mario cart, Mario party, Sid meijers pirates,
Some games we didn't like: turtles through time (too simple controls?), halo, starcraft, portal
What we are mainly looking for: best Side by side gaming experience (pass and play okay SOMETIMES) for nes, snes, gba (maybe), n64, ps1, GC, wii, PC, anything else old-gen :)
Thanks a ton mefi!

Secret of Mana for SNES will always be my favorite coop memory from my childhood. Controls are pretty easy and tasks are divided up between people so she can just do action or cast spells.

If you like hack-and-slash/RPG stuff, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was fun!

Rayman Origins was our perfect coop game of the year [4-player local coop platformer]. I haven't tried the newly released Rayman Legends but it promises to be more of the same so I'm looking forward to getting to it soon. I highly recommend using controllers, 1 pc, and a TV - it really is a lovely throwback to the old SNES platformers like Donkey Kong Country.
Castle Crashers also feels like an old-school side scrolling brawler, and it's lots of fun with a similar setup.
The Walking Dead maybe? While it isn't coop it's one of the few games I enjoy watching someone else play as much as playing myself.
Back when we had an xbox Kung Fu Chaos was our go-to party game.
Ooooh also Atomic Bomberman and Jamestown!
c/p-ing my answer from somewhere else.

Asked my ubergamer husband this question and he suggested: Diddy Kong Racing, any of the Mario or Lego whatsists you haven't played yet, Secret of Mana. There's an excellent 4-player Legend of Zelda for a handheld, but he doesn't remember the title. I would add any of the Dance Dance Revolutions that might be available (I played mostly on the PS2).
